Healing mind and body – my first Reiki experience

Are you a spiritual person? I guess I am although I don’t spend a lot of time thinking about it. Like most people, I say a little prayer when I am in a tight corner in the hope that a little help might be forthcoming – whether the prayer is directed at the Almighty or at a deceased friend or relative varies, depending on the gravity of the situation and the degree of help required.

Spirituality popped up unexpectedly this week when I had the opportunity to experience a Reiki taster session. Although I have heard of Reiki healing, this was my first encounter with a Reiki practitioner.

I was asked to sit in a upright chair while the practitioner held a crystal in front of my face to  read my chakras. She then placed her hands on my shoulders and I was surprised at how quickly and easily I relaxed. After that, there was no further actual touch involved in the treatment. Unlike massage, reiki therapy seems to concern itself with moving energy around the body. The therapists hands were about 3 inches away from me throughout the treatment. What surprised me was the sensation of heat that the Reiki treatment brought out. The longer the treatment continued the more I became curious about my reaction to it. At the end of the treatment, the Reiki practitioner told me that she had sensed a ‘presence’ with me, someone who had been with me from childhood. I’m still not sure what to make of that but I am curious to learn more about Reiki healing and symbols. Perhaps I’ll make an appointment and have a proper session next time. Watch this space.
