Sweating about the Small Stuff – Feeling anxious during Menopause
One of the disadvantages of having had almost two weeks of relaxation is that it provided the perfect opportunity to foster heightened levels of anxiety about all manner of insignificant issues aggravated by the inability to anything practical to tackle the problems partly because of lack of inclination and partly through lack of opportunity with so many places of business being closed or under-staffed through the holiday season. Recognising that anxiety is irrational – particularly when the sources are truly insignificant – is not in itself a remedy to experiencing the symptoms so it got me to thinking whether this is yet another unwanted aspect of the dreaded ‘change’ and, sure enough, there is plenty to suggest that menopause and anxiety may go hand in hand. The question, then, is what to do about it. Common sense dictates that a few lifestyle modifications should help if the symptoms are mild so that will be my first port of call. Pilates is already on the agenda – a little yoga may also help, and perhaps cutting back a bit on the wine and coffee too. More importantly, getting back to work will drastically cut down on the time available for self-absorbtion. What a pain though. Hormones. Who needs them?
