Investment Shopping – London Fog Trench Coat

London Fog Trench Coat

Investment Shopping – when spending more on a coat pays a long term dividend

What began as an impulse buy in one of the department stores in Toronto’s Eaton Centre five years ago has turned out to be one of my best investment purchases. It is a black London Fog Trench Coat with a hood and detachable lining that has seen me through five winters of commuting. The coat cost CAN$100 on sale. I reckon that means it has cost me CAN$20 a year for the five years I’ve been wearing it and I’m not ruling out getting another winter out of it. The hood gets rid of the need for an umbrella if the rain is not too heavy – and provides some shelter from the storm when commuting in high winds. This coat has been through the washing machine once or twice, and the pocket lining has been mended with needle and thread, but outwardly it looks pretty much as it did when I bought it. There must come a point in time, when the depreciation ends and I will end up in profit. Now THAT’s  what I call an investment purchase.
