In Ireland, January 6th — the last day of the Christmas season — is known as Nollaig na mBan. Traditionally, this was the day when women caught up with each other for a quieter celebration after all their hard work over the festive period.
For me, 2016 is the first year in a long time that didn’t start with a deadline. Instead, thanks to quitting my job and setting up my own content marketing business, I’ve been able to take some time out for family, friends and just to enjoy being at home. That’s not to say, I haven’t been working, because I’ve definitely kept up with email and general admin. But, thanks to being my own boss at last, I have more control than ever before over how and where I spend my time and that feels very precious.
So, today, I’m celebrating Nollaig na mBan by taking the afternoon off to drink tea, read and eat cake. The book, a debut thriller, is Rebound by Aga Lesiewicz and I’ll be reviewing it over on izzyreads.com later this month.
In the meantime, wherever you are today, I hope you’re having a happy Nollaig na mBan and that when the decorations come down, the New Year brings you health, happiness and your heart’s desire.
