Corporate dress codes and the menopause

Business Dress

Staying with the theme of clothing for the workplace, did you see that story a few weeks back about the bank with the dress code that specified what colour underwear staff should wear and said men should wear watches to give clients the impression of reliability and so on?

Chances are if you work in corporate environment, it won’t have come as any great surprise. Certainly it was no great surprise to me. Just the other day, I met a very stylish  fortysomething woman who had been told that it was okay to wear trousers at work but that skirt suits should always be worn to the first meeting with any new client. I’m not sure what her particular company’s code would require of the guys.

Another woman friend was recently sent to have her ‘colours’ done to help her smarten up her appearance for a promotion.

All of which goes to prove that corporate dressing is a serious business. It’s no joke being a menopausal woman in such an environment. When it comes to dress, most menopause advice talks about the importance of ‘layering’ so we can strip off when we’re overheated and layer back up again when the chills set in.

The office that requires a suited look is not particularly menopause friendly as any woman who spends her day boxed up in a tailored jacket can attest. The best policy may be to embrace your personal style even if that means missing out on the odd promotion. Chances are by the time you reach the menopause you’ll be less interested in climbing the corporate ladder anyway and more interested – and contented – in being yourself.
